How to improve your work-life balance

Hard work is inevitable, especially when you’re trying to grow your business. However, all that hard work could be for naught if you burn out.

So, how do you manage work-life balance in your small business? You may just scoff at the idea, or think it’s preposterous.

By finding a balance that works for you, it can help you succeed at work and home too.

Here are some ways you can de-stress and make time for you and your family:

Get the work in, then get out

Working long hours doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be more productive. Take stock of how many hours you want to work a day or week (be realistic) and set aside other hours to give you free time to do what you please. By reducing your hours and taking time for yourself, you may just find you‘re more productive in the long run. You may also find that you’re more relaxed and ready for a new day of work.

Be more productive

Being efficient with your time allows you to be more productive, which could mean you get more done in less time. The same can be said for being organized. If you’re well organized and have a plan in place for how to allocate your hours, you could save valuable time. Not only will you have the time you need to get things done, but with a good plan in place, you won't waste much time tracking everything that needs to get done.

Try to avoid distractions

Let’s be honest, there are numerous distractions at work that may take your eye off the ball. If you’re serious about fostering a work-life balance, then there are ways to combat them. For instance, if it works for your business, consider checking your emails only at a certain time of day. The same goes for voice mail or phone messages. Social media and the Internet help us in our daily work lives but can also be a big distraction, so try to use those tools only when needed. Avoiding smaller distractions could make for bigger gains elsewhere.

Learn to delegate

As a business owner you may take it upon yourself to do everything — this way you know it will get done. But this may not always be the best scenario for achieving your objectives.

By delegating to other staff members, not only will you be empowering them and showing them you trust their ability, but you’ll also be freeing up time for you to do other things, like heading out early so that you can enjoy “me time.”
